Rattans are climbing palms that are extensively used for making baskets and furniture. Unlike bamboo, which is hollow, rattan is a solid timber vine that grows in the jungles. Rattan grows in a long slender stem, which maintains an almost uniform diameter throughout its length. The shade in the forests is very dense and climbing on tree limbs is the most practical way for the rattan vines to reach the light above the forest canopy. The outer portion of the stem is extremely hard and durable, while the inner portion of the stem is softer and somewhat porous. There is no harvesting season for rattan, it grows year round. Harvesting can be difficult due to the landscape and inaccessibility of the jungle. The diameter and length of the rattan according to the specie of rattan can be as long as 15 – 30 meters, however they are cut into shorter lengths and tied into bundles to make the journey from community jungle to processing area.
Located in the tropical climate and best landscape with rich forest and soil, Cambodia allows rattan grow so well especially at the mountainous areas at the South West and North West of Cambodia. There are about 21 species have been identified, where 6 – 10 species of rattan are commercially used for handicraft and furniture. Rattan, in Cambodia is regarded as a non-timber forest product which makes a crucial contribution to local livelihoods, and rattan canes are vitally important to farmers as they provide extra income in addition to normal agricultural activities. It is considerably crucial to rural livelihood development and national economy through in-country processing
